IRONMAN New Zealand Taupo 2024: A Race in One of the World's Most Beautiful Places

IRONMAN New Zealand is the second-oldest IRONMAN race in the world (behind Hawaii) and one of the most loved on the global circuit. Racing in Taupo in March 2024 was my 11th Full Distance IRONMAN finish, and I crossed in 11:22. The setting alone is worth the trip; the race execution is a masterclass in IRONMAN organising.
Why Taupo Is Special
Lake Taupo is the largest lake in Australasia — a 616 sq km caldera created by a massive volcanic eruption around 26,500 years ago. The town of Taupo sits on its northern shore. Late March (autumn in NZ) brings 12–20°C temperatures, which makes for ideal racing conditions.
Swim — 3.8 km in Lake Taupo
Wetsuit-mandatory in 18°C fresh water. Two-loop course with an Australian exit, starting from a sloped grass bank. Visibility is excellent — you can see the bottom 5 m down. I swam 1:08 in clean, cold, beautifully clear water.
Bike — 180 km Across Volcanic Plains
The bike course is a 2-loop ride from Taupo north toward Reporoa and back. Rolling terrain with one significant climb (the “Centennial Drive” section), about 1,400 m of total elevation. The road quality is good, drafting is well marshalled by motorbike officials, and the wind in March was light to moderate.
I rode 5:48 in aero almost continuously, fuelling on the flatter sections and easing on the climbs.
Run — Lakefront Marathon
Three loops along the Taupo lakefront with one short hill per loop. Crowd support is genuinely warm — the entire town comes out. Aid stations are professional, well-stocked and athlete-friendly.
Marathon split: 4:08. The cool air made aerobic running feel almost effortless compared to my Asian races.
Travel Guide for Indian Athletes
Fly Delhi/Mumbai to Auckland (AKL) on Singapore Airlines or Air New Zealand, then a 3.5-hour drive south to Taupo, or fly to Rotorua and drive 1 hour. Visa: NZ NZeTA required for Indians; processing 1–3 days online.
Stay around the Taupo lakefront. Hilton Lake Taupo, Wairakei Resort, and various boutique B&Bs in town all serve athletes well. Total trip cost: NZD 5,000–7,500 (INR 3–5 lakh) for two weeks including race entry.
Course Tips
- Train cold-water swimming if you live in southern India — 18°C in a wetsuit is a different sensation.
- Pack arm warmers and a windproof gilet for the bike start — sunrise is cold.
- Centennial Drive climb appears on each loop — pace it as if you have to do it 3 times, not once.
- Build in a 5-day pre-race acclimation window for jet lag (NZ is +6.5 hours from India).
Coaching Takeaway
Taupo is one of the rare races where the limiting factor is rarely environmental — it is bike fitness and run discipline. For Indian athletes, the build into Taupo can be done largely in our cool months (Dec–Feb), which works beautifully with our domestic training calendar.
