IRONMAN Kalmar Sweden 2023: Baltic Swim, Bridges and a Cobblestone Finish

IRONMAN Kalmar Sweden race

IRONMAN Kalmar 2023 was my 9th Full Distance IRONMAN finish, completed in 11:06 — my fastest IRONMAN at that time. Kalmar is one of the most loved races on the European circuit, and the combination of cool weather, fast course and an incredible finish-line atmosphere lived up to every word.

Why Kalmar Is a Bucket-List European Race

Kalmar is a small Swedish coastal town in Småland, dating back to the 12th century. The race is built around two iconic features: the Kalmar Strait swim and the Öland Bridge — one of Europe's longest bridges, crossing 6 km from the mainland to the island of Öland.

Swim — 3.8 km in the Kalmar Strait

Wetsuit-mandatory in 17–19°C salt water. The course is a 2-loop rectangle just off Kalmar Castle. Visibility is moderate; sighting is straightforward off the large yellow buoys. I swam 1:09 — smooth, settled, no chop.

Bike — The Öland Bridge and Beyond

The bike starts in Kalmar, crosses the Öland Bridge, does a loop on the island of Öland, returns over the bridge, and finishes through the rolling Småland countryside. Total elevation: about 700–900 m. The road surface is excellent. The wind on Öland is the variable — in 2023 we had a 20–25 km/h tailwind out and a brutal headwind back.

I rode 5:38 in steady aero position. The bridge crossings are unforgettable — you can see the Baltic on both sides for 6 km.

Run — Through Kalmar's Old Town

Three loops along the Kalmar waterfront, into the old town past Kalmar Castle, and back along the cobblestoned streets. The finish is in the central square with thousands of locals lining the streets banging cowbells. It is loud, it is warm, it is special.

Marathon split: 3:54 — the cool air and flat course let me run honest the entire way.

Travel Guide for Indian Athletes

Fly Delhi/Mumbai to Stockholm (ARN) or Copenhagen (CPH), then a 4-hour drive or train south to Kalmar. Schengen visa required — apply 6 weeks ahead.

Stay in central Kalmar — Calmar Stadshotell, Best Western Apelviken or any of the apartment rentals along the waterfront. Total trip cost: INR 2.5–4 lakh including flights, hotel and race entry.

Course Tips

  • The bridge has long open exposure — deeper front wheel is risky if winds are gusting above 30 km/h.
  • Wear arm warmers and a gilet — sunrise on race day in August is around 12°C.
  • The cobblestone section in the old town is short but uneven — trail runners are not needed; just expect mild slowdown.
  • Recover with a Swedish meatball dinner. Trust me.

Coaching Takeaway

Kalmar is the kind of race I recommend to athletes who have already finished one or two IRONMANs and now want a course that lets them run a true marathon. The bike is fast but not flat enough to be boring; the run is genuinely fast; and the finish line atmosphere is unmatched. For Indian athletes, August in Sweden is a perfect escape from the monsoon training conditions back home.
