IRONMAN Israel 2022: Racing the Middle East Championship in Tiberias

The IRONMAN Middle East Championship in Tiberias, Israel was my 7th Full Distance IRONMAN finish — 11:09. This race carries the prestige of being a regional championship, which means a deeper field, more Kona slots, and a course built to be challenging and beautiful at the same time.
Why Tiberias Is a Special Venue
Tiberias sits on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee — one of the most historically and spiritually significant bodies of water in the world. The race village is set up along the lakefront promenade, with the Galilee mountains rising to the west.
Swim — 3.8 km in the Sea of Galilee
Wetsuit-legal in 21°C fresh water. Two-loop course in calm conditions. Visibility is good. The novelty of swimming in the Sea of Galilee never quite leaves you. I swam 1:08, comfortable rhythm.
Bike — 180 km Through the Jordan Valley
The bike course traces a long out-and-back from Tiberias south through the Jordan Valley toward Beit She'an, then back. Total elevation: about 1,300 m. The course is fast on the southbound leg with a tailwind, brutal on the return into a headwind. Smooth roads throughout.
I rode 5:36, sitting in aero deep into the wind on the return leg. Pacing this course requires accepting that the second half will feel much harder than the first half — psychological discipline is half the battle.
Run — Tiberias Promenade
Three-loop run along the Tiberias promenade and into the city. Mostly flat with one short climb per loop. November weather was perfect — 16–22°C, low humidity. Marathon split: 4:08.
Travel Guide for Indian Athletes
Fly Delhi/Mumbai to Tel Aviv (TLV) on Air India direct or via Istanbul/Doha. Then a 2-hour drive north to Tiberias. Visa: Israel B/2 visa for Indians; processing 2–4 weeks via the Israeli embassy.
Stay along the Tiberias promenade. Leonardo Plaza, Rimonim and various boutique hotels are popular. Total trip cost: INR 2.5–4 lakh including race entry.
Course Tips
- The headwind return on the bike is consistent — train into the wind, not just with it.
- Sea of Galilee swim has minor currents near the rivers feeding in — sight long.
- November is shoulder season — pack a windproof for the early bike start.
- Add 2–3 days for Jerusalem and the Dead Sea after the race.
Coaching Takeaway
Tiberias rewards bike pacing wisdom. The athletes who finish strong here are the ones who do not over-cook the southbound tailwind leg. For my coached athletes, we simulate this scenario in training: long rides where the second half is into the wind, deliberately, to teach the mental and physical discipline of holding back when conditions feel free.
