IRONMAN Busselton 2023: A Flat-Fast Course and a Milestone 10th Finish

IRONMAN Busselton Australia race

IRONMAN Western Australia in Busselton was my 10th Full Distance IRONMAN finish — a personal milestone — clocked in 11:12. Busselton has a deserved reputation as one of the fastest courses on the IRONMAN calendar, and December 2023 lived up to it.

Why Busselton Is a PR Hunter's Race

Busselton is a small town in Western Australia, about 220 km south of Perth. The race is built around the iconic Busselton Jetty — the longest wooden jetty in the southern hemisphere at 1.8 km. The bike course is genuinely flat (under 500 m total elevation), the run is flat, and the December weather sits between 18–26°C.

Swim — Around the Jetty

Two-loop swim around the Busselton Jetty in calm Geographe Bay. Wetsuit-legal in 19°C water. Visibility is unreal — mid-swim you can look down and see fish swimming under the jetty pylons. I swam 1:07, sighting easily off the jetty itself.

Bike — The Flattest 180 km I've Ridden

Three loops along Layman Road and Caves Road through the rural countryside near Cape Naturaliste. Total elevation under 500 m, almost no technical sections, smooth tarmac. Wind is the only variable; the south-westerly came in around km 100.

I rode 5:24 in aero throughout. This is a course where good aerodynamic discipline is worth 10–15 minutes over the day.

Run — Beachfront Marathon

Three loops along the Busselton beachfront. Flat, smooth pavement, well-stocked aid stations every 1.5 km. Crowd support is excellent on the final loop.

Marathon split: 4:14. The cool sea breeze and flat profile made running honest.

Travel Guide for Indian Athletes

Fly Delhi/Mumbai to Perth (PER) on Singapore Airlines, Qantas or Air India. Then a 2.5-hour drive south to Busselton; rental car is the easiest option. Visa: Australia ETA (subclass 601) for Indians via VFS, allow 4–6 weeks.

Stay in Busselton town centre or Geographe area. Abbey Beach Resort, Aqua Resort and Esplanade Hotel Busselton are popular. Total trip cost: AUD 5,000–7,000 (INR 3–4.5 lakh) for two weeks including race entry.

Why I Recommend Busselton for First-Time Sub-11 Athletes

  • Course profile gives you the cleanest shot at a personal best.
  • Cool weather forgives nutritional and pacing minor mistakes.
  • Race village, transition, swim and finish are all within 1 km of each other.
  • Margaret River wine region is 30 minutes away — family-friendly trip.

Coaching Takeaway

Busselton is the race where bike position matters more than bike power. For athletes I coach into Busselton, we spend 6 weeks on aero position refinement, time-trial pacing intervals, and bike-to-run brick training. The marathon usually takes care of itself if the bike is paced correctly.
